PREPARING FOR PAINTING
MAKES THE JOB EASY

Painting a room seems to be the number one do-it-yourself project in America! A simple can of paint can magically transform a so-so room into something wonderful. But good painters will tell you that it's usually more about the preparation work than the painting itself. Here are some general hints to make your next paint job go smoothly.

Before you begin painting:

  • Empty the room. Remove everything you can. and then cover everything else with drop cloths.
  • Clean the walls with a mild cleaner to help the paint go on smoother.
  • Cover stains with a good primer or Kilz so they don't show through the new coats of paint.
  • Clean off or cover mildew with a commercial product found at home-improvement and paint stores.
  • Repair nail holes in the drywall. Sand and re-spackle any area that needs it.
  • Vacuum the room first to get rid of as much dust as possible. Don't forget windowsills and baseboards.
  • Mask off trim or other areas you need to paint around.

Preparation work takes time, but the end result will be a paint job you'll be proud of!
