Duct Cleaning Essential to Indoor Air Quality
For Existing Homes and New Construction, Air Duct Cleaning Helps
Maintain Healthy Indoor Environment
The Indoor Environment:
During the most intense months of winter and summer, (and during the spring rain) we spend more of our time indoors. LCS Kleen-Aire, a member of the National Air Duct Cleaners Association, reminds industry professionals and homeowners about the importance of cleaning their air ducts at least every 3-5 years along with proper HVAC maintenance in order to help improve the air quality within an existing or newly constructed home.
Mike McGauley, owner of LCS Kleen-Aire says, "The frequency can depend on the number of contaminants that enter the home. These can include put not limited to smoking, pets, residents with allergies or asthma, or after home renovation or remodeling."
It is important for homeowners to change or clean their HVAC filter every 90 days. "LCS Kleen-Aire recommends the use of a merv 6 filter, which will be more effective in keeping contaminants out of the air you breathe," said McGauley. Changing your filter frequently will also help increase system efficiency to reduce the amount of energy used thus resulting in a potential cost saving for the homeowner. "For those who suffer from allergies getting your air ducts cleaned by a qualified provider may dramatically improve the air quality in your house." said McGauley.
When moving into a new home, McGauley says it is also important for owners of newly built homes to have air ducts cleaned after the building process. Contaminants such as sheet rock, dirt, debris, the installation of carpets, etc., can easily enter the air ducts during this time.
What you Should know before selecting a cleaner:
As you consider having your HVAC system cleaned, McGauley suggest that you review the following pre-qualifications in selecting your contractor.
*Make sure the company is a member in good standing of the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA)
*Make sure that the company has been in business long enough to have adequate experience and referrals.
*Ask for proof of insurance and proper licenses.
*Check that the company is certified by NADCA to perform HVAC system cleaning.
*Make sure that the company is going to clean and visually inspect all of the air ducts and related system components.
*Avoid advertisements for "$99 whole house specials" and other sales gimmicks.
*Ask if the company has the right equipment to effectively perform cleaning, and if the company has done work in homes similar to yours. Get references from other clients if possible.
